Rocky Mountain News, R.I.P.

Today it was announced that Denver's 150-year old daily newspaper the Rocky Mountain News is closing down.  Tomorrow.  Damn.

The Rocky is one of my oldest memories of visiting Denver.  The odd tabloid format, the ads for the White Spot diners on the comics page, the last page always being an ad for May D&F, just the whole big city newspaper vibe -- much more exciting than the Casper Star-Tribune!

So tomorrow's Rocky will be a big commemorative issue (including much of the material they had prepared for their 150th anniversary issue in May), and Saturday my subscription will change to the Denver Post.  And 95% of the Rocky's employees will be out on the street, and Denver readers will be served by the "winner" of the newspaper war: the paper that had the smaller circulation but can charge more for their ads because their pages are bigger.  Meh...
