Professor John Allen Tallmadge, Jr., 80, Media, PA, passed away from natural causes in his residence on Saturday, June 7, 2008.
Born in Allentown, PA on February 19, 1928, he was the son of the late John Allen and Alice Parker Tallmadge. He was married to the late Ruth S. Tallmadge from 1954 until 1974, and was the widower of Nancy D. Tallmadge, who passed away in 1990.
Professor Tallmadge was a 1945 graduate of Allentown H.S. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering at Carnegie-Mellon University. He served in the US Army Reserve from 1948 to 1964. He worked at DuPont for three years before moving on to teach at Yale and Drexel Universities for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was considered an international authority on fluid mechanics of precision coating and wrote 78 publications on that subject and others. He was a long time member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE, as a Fellow), the American Chemical Society and the American Society for Engineering Education. Professor Tallmadge also sponsored a biannual award presented for "Contributions to Coating Technology" through the AIChE. He received numerous honors, including Outstanding Educator Award (USA, 1973), Fulbright Lecturer in Environmental Engineering (1974), and Outstanding Teacher, Drexel University College of Engineering (1979). He was elected Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering for Drexel University in 1991.
He loved tennis, traveling, baseball (the Yankees as a child and the Phillies as an adult) and had season tickets to theatrical plays and both the orchestra and the opera of Philadelphia for many years. He served in many roles at his church, Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, and believed strongly in higher education, having generously established endowments at both Lehigh and Drexel Universities.
Professor Tallmadge is survived by his sister Alice T. Mason of Clarence, NY, and his three daughters, Jane S. Tallmadge, Medford, NJ, Beth P. Tallmadge, wife of Shad Z. Daly, Lakewood, CO, and Susan T. Naughton, wife of Kenneth J. Naughton, Myerstown, PA. He is also survived by a grandson, Joseph P. Naughton; two stepsons, Dr. Robert Harris, Hanover, NH, and John Harris, Largo, FL; and his dear, close friend Joan Carlson, Media, PA.
Services will be held on Friday, June 27, 2008, at 2 pm in Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, 727 Harvard Ave., Swarthmore, PA. Arrangements are being handled by the J. Nelson Rigby Funeral Home, Media, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church, 727 Harvard Ave., Swarthmore, PA 19081.
