Happy Santa's List Day

Sorry for not posting in three days (yikes!). Been busy with Christmas preparation and getting ready for the company trip to Mexico and other stuff. And then crap happens, like Beth has car trouble, and I get a speeding ticket, and there's graffiti in our car port, etc. But there's good stuff too, like going and seeing the Christmas parade and Pride & Prejudice on Saturday.  And Mexico will be epic!

Remember when I hinted that big things were going on at work that I couldn't talk about? Well, the official announcement has been made, so let me share it with you:

Dear RegOnline Customer:

We are excited to inform you that on October 31, 2007, The Active Network, Inc., acquired RegOnline. The Active Network, headquartered in San Diego, CA, is a leading provider of technology and marketing solutions for event organizers, community organizations and consumer brands that enable and encourage participation. Active's services and solutions serve multiple industries worldwide and include online registration and facility reservation systems, online payment processing, donations, point-of-sale solutions, membership sales and tracking, database management and reporting, and marketing and website management solutions.

Your relationship with RegOnline will remain the same, and you will continue to receive the same level of support and commitment from the team you have come to know and trust. Through our collective efforts with The Active Network, we will be able to offer added expertise and provide an even better product for you over the coming months and years.

We will maintain our offices and operations in Boulder, CO, and both Bill Flagg and myself will continue to independently run this division of the Active Network. As we have in the past, we will foster a business model that is focused on customer input and feedback, backed by integrity and respect.

We are excited about sharing this milestone with you and want to thank you for being a part of our success. As always we look forward to making your events even more successful.

So, is this really a good thing? Yes, I believe so. They have already gone to great lengths to keep all us existing employees happy, so I'm willing to ride it out and see what happens...

And by the way, do you know what Santa's List Day is all about? It's the day that Santa and his elves try to get the first drafts of the Nice and Naughty lists done by. So be good for goodness sake!

Hey dude, you should take a good look at what happened to some of their other recent purchases before you get too drunk on the kool-aid!

Please, tell me more. Don't leave me hanging like that, Mr. Anonymous Googling Guy...

You are going to have to do some digging on your own bud. To help though, check out a few of the recent purchases and find out how long the staff remained and whether or not the products were improved and upgraded.

Good for them
Active Network owns the SMB Market and Starcite owns the Russell 2000 market.

This will give Active Network a firm grip on the SMB market when it comes online registration. Although, there are 300 companies that do this, but they are only one who is profitable and will be around 10 years from now.

Re: Powerhouse
You don't get any traction buying a whole bunch of small, marginally profitable businesses with different products and platforms. The extra overhead of having to pay the founders a real salary and getting the companies to even a basic level of accounting and business best practices wipes out any profit the companies were making.

The benefit comes from standardizing on a single platfrom and then moving all of the customers from the other products to the one standard. Jack up the prices and then get rid of the extra employees and you will then start to have a business. Investors expect a big payback and that only comes from cost cutting and a streamlining of operations.
