New Comics Wednesday

We're back, and the cruise was great fun, and I'm putting all the photos together now, and I'll write more soon...  I know I always say that, but I mean it this time...

But until then, I did buy some comics today:

Countdown #50 & 49 -- I'm still trying it, and 50 seemed like it was just treading water (with a gratuitous Joker appearance), but 49 was much better, moving at a snappy pace with a few cool surprises.  It looks like the shops are keeping plenty of issue in stock, so maybe I'll stop for a while and listen to the buzz.  If people are saying good things, I can always play catch-up...

Iron Man: Hypervelocity #5 -- Not much to say, it's the penultimate issue, you are either already on board or not...

This week's cheap back issue:
Mangazine #46 (July 2003) -- This was always an odd little project... In 1999, Antarctic Press was publishing four monthly comics with solid followings: Ninja High School, Warrior Nun Areala, Gold Digger and some mini-series or one-shot by Ted Nomura that fit into his sprawling "Family of Altered Wars" saga.  So they decided to publish a thick monthly comic that was basically all four of those, bound under one cover (plus some extra stuff too).  And it would only cost as much as three regular comics, so it was like getting one comic book free.  When Mangazine started, I was getting Ninja High School and Warrior Nun Areala and I had picked up Gold Digger on and off, so I thought Mangazine sounded like a good deal and I stayed with it for a few years (even tho "Family of Altered Wars" bored me to tears).  By #46 I had stopped picking it up, because Warrior Nun Areala had gotten really bad and it wasn't a good deal for just two comics I wanted.  But getting #46 today for just 99¢ seemed like a good value...
